In the mid-19th century in Alcoy they were looking for a quick way to export their products, mainly from the textile and paper industry, as well as ensure the supply of coal necessary for machinery. For this reason, there were various train projects towards the main railway lines and towards the coast and its ports.
In 1882, the concession was granted to build and manage a narrow gauge railway that connected Alcoy with Villena, plus two branches that went to Alcudia de Crespins at one end and Yecla at the other. The initiative had a first project from 1865, although it was not fully realized.15
The concessionaire company inaugurated its first section between Villena and Bañeres in 1884. A year later, the route was extended to Bocairente and in 1887 the itinerary from Villena to Yecla was completed. At that time, the route had its southern branch completed and 31 km completed on its northern branch towards Alcoy.
Despite the above, the company suffered serious economic problems in the following years and in 1899 ended up losing the concession. Later, in 1902, new owners recovered that concession, modifying the service to be provided. The idea of reaching Alcudia de Crespins, to connect with the line to Valencia, was abandoned and it was decided to end the route in Muro de Alcoy. There it was connected to the coast thanks to the Alcoy-Gandía line, which had been launched in 1893 and passed through the town. With this purpose, in 1906 the Bocairente-Agres section was inaugurated and in 1909 the road reached Muro de Alcoy.6
On the southern branch of the line, it was thought to expand the service to add wine transportation to the business. Thus, in 1905 the route was extended to Jumilla. Later, in 1921, the train reached Cieza, although this last section was leased to the company Ferrocarriles Secundarios del Sud of Spain.
After the Spanish civil war, the VAY train came to stay with the Alcoy-Cieza and Villena-Gandía services. The company overcame all obstacles in its future with economic difficulties. However, the decline in transport contracting and growing competition from the highway did not help. In 1965 the railway was managed by Ferrocarriles Españoles de Vía Estrecha, Feve, the entity created for the purpose of nationalizing narrow gauge trains. After a period of survival, the train was permanently closed on July 1, 1969, and shortly after the tracks and metal bridges were dismantled.
In 2004, the Alicante Provincial Council began to carry out the work on the greenway, the 15 km route between Las Virtudes and Biar.1The path, given that the route to Alcoy has disappeared for the most part, begins in Cocentaina, at the Alcudia roundabout. You cross some industrial warehouses and then enter a field of olive trees and reeds. In 4 km. You reach Muro de Alcoy, in whose town center the old station is located, continue through an industrial estate and enter the shade of the Sierra de Mariola. This is the lushest part of the route, since the path is surrounded by pine and holm oak trees. The valley widens as the Agres station approaches, where transfers from the Alcoy-Játiva line were made. To the left, up the mountain, is Agres, but the path continues towards Alfafara, about 5 km away. From here, the space widens towards Bocairente, whose medieval old town is well visible from the road. There, as part of the route has disappeared, you must take the service road of the CV-81 highway to the outskirts of Bañeres. The station in this town is on a wide avenue, next to an old paper factory. The path continues, crossing El Salse, towards Benejama, whose station is located somewhat away from the town center, next to an old liquor industry. The landscape from this point on is made up of fruit fields, olive groves and vineyards. We continue to Biar, where the most impressive bridge of the entire path is found, with four stone pilasters over a rugged ravine. Here the trail coincides with a section of the Camino de Santiago del Sureste. The next town is Villena, whose station, still in operation, is reached after crossing part of the urban area. From Villena, on the CV-813 highway, the old railway route is resumed, continuing through vineyards towards Las Virtudes and from there it continues to Yecla, at whose station the trail ends.

Although the Ferr0carriles Yearbook, Carlos Bailly Bailiere of 1874, page 203, indicates that in 1870 the works on some sections of this line were stopped, because the company was not established with any capital, ignoring its project. The law of September 3, 1880 authorized Angel Calderón Martínez to build and operate for 99 years an economic railway that, starting from Villena, with a branch to Yecla, heads to Alcoy and from the most convenient point on the route connects with the line. of the Almansa to Valencia Railway. The concession was granted based on the specific specifications approved in the R.O. of June 27, 1882, being accepted by the concessionaire and adjusted to the project approved by the RO. on June 20 of the same year. The deposit required from the concessionaire was 242,832 pesetas, representing 3% of the value of the works project, which amounted to 8,094,400 pesetas. The conditions were reflected in the Law of July 27, 1882 (Gaceta de Madrid, 08/04/1882). On the other hand, on August 16, 1882, the Company of Economic Railways from Villena to Alcoy and Alcudia de Crespins was established in Barcelona, with the financial support of the Iberian Bank. The company's assets and the profits from the exploitation would guarantee any credit and payment of obligations, as stated in the public deed of November 17, 1883, authorized in the Barcelona notary of Miguel Martí y Sagristá.Once the work began, the Villena to Bañeres section was inaugurated in 1884, stopping the works in 1885 upon arrival in Bocairente. The financial crisis of Banco Ibérico de Barcelona, liquidated that same year, left the railway company in the hands of a liquidation board. The Villena station obeyed a project of June 6, 1883 drawn up by the engineer Angel Calderón, and the passenger building was started according to a project modified by the architect José Novaes, drawn up on September 2, 1884. This station had 7 ml rotating plate and two other auxiliary plates for cars and wagons. The rotunda warehouse had five bays. The company's workshops were located at the same station. The section between Villena and Bañeras, the first of those built by the Villena to Alcoy and Yecla Railway, came into operation on April 12, 1884.In 1887, Mariano Baldomero Díaz requested authorization to study a railway between Yecla and Jumilla, granting a period of one year, after paying a deposit of 1,000 pesetas. The Administration authorized him by the R.O. of August 29, 1887 (Madrid Gazette, 02/09/1887). However, by the R.O. May 16, 1890 (Gaceta de Madrid, 05/17/1890) the railway that departs from Jumilla ends in Yecla was granted to Rogelio López Madrid, without subsidy from the State, enjoying the classification of public utility for the purposes of expropriations, granting the concession for 99 years.Until within the preliminary draft of the Secondary Railway Plan, the line from Villena to Alcoy was considered and relaunched under certain conditions, being included by the State in the preliminary draft of the Secondary Railway Plan published in the R.O. of January 13, 1893.By the law of July 16, 1891 (Gaceta de Madrid, 07/18/1891) the company was granted a 30-month extension for the construction of the branch that according to article 1 of the Law of September 3, 1882 should link this line with that from Almansa to Valencia, starting from Virgen de la Luz, concluding in Onteniente, linking in this last station with the broad gauge railway from Játiva to Alcoy, granted by the Law of July 3, 1887.In 1892, the company, with 54 km in operation, transported 34,373 passengers and 30,556 tons of merchandise, achieving income of 131,629.64 pts, against 183,410.50 pts of expenses (Anuario de los Ferrocarriles Españoles, year 1894).The company from Villena to Alcoy and Yecla was granted repeated extensions, since despite having 53 km in operation, the bases of the particular conditions of the concession had not been met, requesting from different forums that the expiration be granted. (Illustrated Railway Magazine, 01/04/1893). On July 14, 1893, the Ministry of Public Works ordered the Civil Governor of Alicante and the engineer of the Railway Division to proceed with the seizure on behalf of the Railway State. The Civil Governor of Alicante was subsequently ordered to restore the service, upon being authorized by the Madrid Railway Commission. Ordering that the payments and collections made be seized and, if the treasury is not recovered in six months, the concession will be considered expired. To comply with what was ordered, the civil engineer Luis Canalejas y Méndez was appointed interim Delegate (GIVF, 01/08/1893). Aided by O.P.'s assistant. Fernando Barta. At the same time as MZA, it suspended its combined services with the V.A.Y. In 1893, exploitation by the State included the 21 km from Villena to Yecla and the 31.25 km from Villena to Bocairente..........
