The Mandarin Phonetic Symbols are a system for Mandarin pronunciation, which was developed in 1913 by the Chinese Pronunciation Unification Committee under the chairmanship of Mr. Wu Ching-heng(Wu Chih-hwei).
The 4th set contains ten stamps in a se-tenant block, valued at NT$6 each, combining the symbols for “ㄠ, ㄡ, ㄢ, ㄣ, ㄤ, ㄥ, ㄦ” with specialities of local administrative areas and “ㄐ一ˊ, ㄧㄡˊ, ㄏㄠˇ” with philately, mail trucks and mailboxes.
The designs are as follows:
ㄠ(ao): Niaosong (niǎo sōng), Chengqing Lake, Bridge of Nine Turns
ㄡ(ou): Houlong (hòu lóng), Watermelon
ㄢ(an): Anle (ān lè), Dawulun Fort
ㄣ(en): Jincheng (jīn chéng), Wind Lion
ㄤ(ang): Zhuangwei (zhuàng wéi), Cantaloupe
ㄥ(eng): Hengchun (héng chūn), Onion
ㄦ(er): Ershui (èr shuǐ), Steam Locomotive
ㄐ一ˊ(jí): Ji (jí), Philately
ㄧㄡˊ(yóu): You (yóu), Mail Truck
ㄏㄠˇ(hǎo): Hao (hǎo), Mailbox
