43rd Christoph Gärtner Auction - February 18th, 2019 - China & Liberated Areas

French P.O.: 1871, 10c. bistre "Napoleon Empire dentele", four copies oblit. by GC "5104" paying the 40c. rate on cover from Shanghai to Pocé/Indre et Loire/France, alongside blue cachet "CANONNIERE / LE SCORPION" and c.d.s. "COR.D.ARMEES INDOCHINE 31 AOUT 71", on reverse two French receivers 21/22 Oct 71. Very rare use of this c.d.s., since only a small African Bataillon has been sent to Tientsin after the 1870 massacres of French clerics. The cachet "Canonniere le Scorpion" is previously unknown; this is the 1st use of this mark on a cover from the Far East. Exceptional piece of French philately in the Far East (some marks/postal wear are mentioned for accuracy only). See J.Desrousseaux T1 page 37 ÷ 1871, 4x10c. bistre obliteres du Gros Chiffre 5104 de Shang-Hai et cachet COR.D.ARMEES INDOCHINE du 31/8/71 sur lettre adressee en France. L'utilisation de ce cachet est tres rare a cette periode, puisqu'en effet, il ne restait que un tres petit bataillon Africain, reste 'la en renfort au massacres de Tien Tsin du 21/6/1870. La Griffe "Canonniere le Scorpion" est inconnue a ce jours, et c'est tres certainement la premiere utilisation de ce type de Griffe sur un courier d'extreme Orient. In april 2005 the idea to build a place where collectors, customers and investors from all over the world could meet, was realized.
Since that time both, the Mail Order House and Auction House Gärtner, have been united on 2.700 m2 in the easy accessible building owned by Christoph Gärtner.
Generous viewing and storage rooms, a private auction hall, enough parking space and an underground car park are available.
