I am proud to meet with you today, in what will be the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our country before the history. One hundred years ago, a greatAmerican, in whose symbolic shadow we blanket today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree meantas a great ray of light and hope for millions of black slaves, scorched in the flames of a withered injustice. It came as a beautifulsunrise at the end of a long night of captivity. But one hundred years later, the negro still is not free; one hundred years later, the life of the negro is still sadly lacerated by the wives of segregation and the chains of discrimination; one hundred years later, the negro lives in a solitary island in the middle of a vast ocean of material prosperity; one hundred years later, the negro stilllanguishing in the corners of American society and is exiled in their own land. Therefore, today we have come here todramatize a shameful condition. In a sense, we have come to our nation´s capital, to collect a check. When the architects of ourRepublic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of independence, signed a promissory note thatevery American should be heir. This document was a promise that all men, they would be guaranteed the inalienable rights tolife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. ……

Estoy orgulloso de reunirme con ustedes hoy, en la que sera ante la historia la mayor manifestacion por la libertad en la historia de nuestro país. Hace cien años, un gran estadounidense, cuya simbolica sombra nos cobija hoy, firmo la Proclama de la emancipacion. Este trascendental decreto significo como un gran rayo de luz y de esperanza para millones de esclavos negros, chamuscados en las llamas de una marchita injusticia. Llego como un precioso amanecer al final de una larga noche de cautiverio. Pero, cien años después, el negro aún no es libre; cien años después, la vida del negro es aún tristemente lacerada por las esposas de la segregacion y las cadenas de la discriminacion; cien años después, el negro vive en una isla solitaria en medio de un inmenso océano de prosperidad material; cien años después, el negro todavía languidece en las esquinas de la sociedad estadounidense y se encuentra desterrado en su propia tierra. Por eso, hoy hemos venido aquí a dramatizar una condicion vergonzosa. En cierto sentido, hemos venido a la capital de nuestro país, a cobrar un cheque. Cuando los arquitectos de nuestra república escribieron las magníficas palabras de la Constitucion y de la Declaracion de Independencia, firmaron un pagaré del que todo estadounidense habría de ser heredero. Este documento era la promesa de que a todos los hombres, les serían garantizados los inalienables derechos a la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad……
