Ireland Mayo Postage Due Military 1844 cover to the East India Company in London, attempted prepayment with framed PAID AT/CASTLEBAR in black on face, intercepted by inspector in Dublin and found overweight, with ‘More to pay/2’ and handstruck arced MORE/TO/PAY in black, Dublin PAID SE 13 44 transit (shows broken frame at left) and London tombstone PAID 14 SP 1844 arrival, backstamped CASTLEBAR SE 12 1844 and Dublin Diamond SE 13 44. Both the Dublin datestamps are coded ‘A’ for Afternoon, and the backstamp has been applied after the extra charge has been levied. The cover is docketed as an enquiry as to the effects of a soldier, Gunner Michael Bird, who served in the East India Army.
