Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) is the most numerous bird of Europe and our most common representative of the family of finches. The multicolour plumage of the male contrasts with the grey colouration of the female. The chaffinch's nest is always perfectly masked with pieces of lichen collected from its nearest neighbourhood, and so it perfectly blends with the surroundings and is very difficult to notice. During he breeding season chafftnches eat mainly insects, including aphlds and ants, but also small seeds of forest plants. In autumn and winter, their diet is dominated by seeds. Interestingly, although chaffinches are present all over Europe and winter together in the Mediterranean region, they are attached to their place of origin and return to their native forests, parks or gardens every year. In addition, the songs ofchaffinches from different regions of Europe vary.
The dialects of male songs come from the fact that sons learn the sound of a song from their fathers. That is why German chaffinches sing differently than Polish or French ones, and even chaffinches from Masuria have a different song than those from Silesia. One should, however, have exceptional abilities to recognize where the chaffinch comes from based on their singing. This skill was mastered by bird experts from Tyrol and even a hundred years ago organized chaffinch singing competitions.
