1970 Famous Chinese Stamps - Hsuan Chuang & Chu Hsi. Formosa(Taiwan), Rep of China.
Sc#1646,1648.

Hsuan Chuang (602-664) started his pilgrimage in 628 to India by Central Asia and returned in 645, being received with public honors by the Emperor Tai Tsung. He brought back 657 Buddhist books besides numerous images, pictures, and 150 relics. The rapid and wide spread of Buddhism in China was largely due to his work.

Chu Hsi (1130-1200) established Neo Confucian orthodoxy by unifying and synthesizing the numerous, variant schools of Confucian thought of his day. Because of the comprehensiveness and persuasive power of his views, Chu Hsi´s scholarship and philosophical speculations have been held in great esteem in China from dynasty to dynasty, even to the present.

Sun Wu, author of "The Art of war of Sunzi", courtesy - named Changqing, was a native of Le An of State Qi (Huimin county, Shandong Prov.) in the later years of Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.). At Wu Zixu´s seventh recommendation, he was received in audience by King He Lu of State Wu for his military theories and was immediately made a general. As he showed up in the conquering wars, Sun Wu quickly proved himself of great strength in military affairs. Due to his remarkable command, State Wu took over the overlord place of State Jin.

"The Art of War of Sunzi" is not only an illustrious martial classics in ancient China, but one of the oldest writings on war art in the world. It consists of 13 chapters. They are: Laying Plan; Waging War; Attack by Stratagem; Tactical Dispositions; Energy; Weak Points and Strong; Manoeuvring; Variation of Tavtics; The Army on the March; Terrain; The Nine Varieties of Ground; The Attack by Fire and The Use of Spies.
