In traditional Chinese beliefs, happiness, wealth, longevity and joy are the four most important pursuits in life.

According to the legend, these four auspicious things are governed by four Star Gods in Heaven.

Artistic renderings of the gods and calligraphy about these four auspicious things have been used for centuries during the celebration and greeting of the Chinese New Year season and other occasions.
